The Art of Cutting

Mankind’s long history is forge by the sword, when the Spartan Greeks defended themselves against the Persians in the Battle of Thermopylae it was the Greek sword Xiphos in hand that held the Persians at bay long enough until the Persian cried uncle and so it was when Alexander the Great carved his way in the known ancient world, armed with the Xiphos coupled by his hammer and anvil tactic and never before seen greek phalanx formation they were unstoppable. The Romans also have their legendary Gladius Hispaniensis or the gladius and like the Macedonian Greeks before them they the Romans carved Europe, North Africa and the Middle East under the Roman might, what is interesting about the Gladius however is that fact that it was not a Roman Sword but Spanish in origin hence the full name Gladius Hispaniensis, and another interest trivia is that it took the Romans two centuries to fully subjugate the Iberian peninsula.  Throughout the centuries the sword played a major part in writing and re-writing history through its victories and its eventual failure. And in all the swords in the world that have survive into the modern age, none can be compared close to the beauty and deadliness of the Japanese Samurai Sword, dub by many expert as the perfect sword.

In today’s day and age the influence of the sword is still kept alive to some extent. Those who practice the ancient arts, find comfort to that fact that the tradition of strength, skill and discipline is interwoven with the sword it wield and the protection it provided. Those in the armed service in which the sword serve as a symbol of authority or distinction, and in some cases the actual use in the field like the Philippine Marines who are issued with standard Guinunting and some Militia in southern Philippines still carries the Kris, Kampilan but most of the time the local versions of the Japanese Samurai Sword. There are those who collect them, perhaps finding its beauty far too irresistible to comprehend, fulfilling the dream of owning one and there sre those who use swords as props in the movies or in Cosplays events and indeed despite of the medieval and sometimes ancient appeal, it was the media above everything else that kept the culture of the sword alive, and then there is me, who use the sword for home protection. And in all of this one particular sword, the Japanese Samurai Sword gain notoriety for its cutting ability and sheer elegance.

Like those in my generation who were born late in the modern age where the closes real thing was the cadet officer’s poor excuse of a sword, use during Citizens Army Training or C.A.T. and those branded by ROTC officers during my college years and at home the sundang or itak in tagalong whose tang was as small as a child’s pinky not very user friendly equipment, but my fascination with blades came earlier in childhood were I do sword plays with the rest of my Barkadas using bamboo stick from discarded nepa roof, also being born in the island of Mactan where the famous battle between Lapu-lapu and Magellan are reenacted every year in April, one can safely say how the influence started filling up.  But it wasn’t until the American TV series in the mid-80s like The Master, the Hollywood movie American Ninja and its localized version Ninja Kids that first sown the seeds of my fascination with the sword and the arts, in particular the Ninja Sword which first influence me before I even knew its opposing rival, the Samurais. Honesty, back then young as I was I had no idea what ninjas are, all I know is that they got some special tricks in their sleeves like the ability to disappear after a puff of smoke, which prompts the to ninja hide or to run like hell and mind you, it was only later that I learned why, the hand claws, the throwing assortments of lethal objects that instantly spell death to the enemy, that among other things got me interested in learning the arts of any discipline for that matter. So the dream of owning one is already a giving in my younger years, unfortunately kids weren’t allowed to bare swords, unlike the Pre-Hispanic days.

The Philippines have the long history in forging blades, the problem I have with this particularly in Cebu is the quality and type they of sword they forge. Another issue I have to face is the type of material use to forge these swords, if you ask any sword maker here about T10, 2 Gen or any blade material they will probably answer Kpop without any hesitation. In the Philippines sword making is limited to certain locations and the raw material aren’t readily available, so mostly swords are forge from recycled steels like train tracks or from God knows where. Again I turn to the internet for the solution and I found Geisha’s blade and as far as I can tell they are the only one I know who are very keen to the type of materials they offer and that is a good thing. Geisha’s Blade is a home base online business in Mandaluyong City, Metro Manila, Philippines, they don’t actually have any physical store, because of this all of their dealings are done online, and theres a good reason for that as it cut the cost of any merchandise they offer, they do have a Dojo at Shaw Blvd, Mandaluyong City, Metro Manila but only on specific time of the week during Saturday, from 6pm – 7pm. In my case since I’m Cebu my inquiries are done online all infacebook and made few inquiries since then. Anyway, to start with I’m not a proud owner of any Geisha’s blade swords, not yet anyway, as I intend to purchase a customized sword from them as soon as everything is in order at my end. Anyway, here is what I found about Geisha’s blade and why I think it’s the best place to buy high quality Japanese Swords in the country without leaving your seat. First off, as a customer you need to know what you’re buying and who you buying it from. Since we’re talking about Japanese sword or anything related to it, it’s only logical to buy from people who have extensive knowledge about the culture and in particular the art that deals with the use of these legendary swords. As I’ve said earlier,  I made few inquiries about the swords they have in their online store via facebook, and the answers were prompt and direct to the point, these guys really know their stuff. To know more about the people behind Geisha’s blade.

Show Me What You Got
Geisha’s Blade has a huge collection of Japanese Samurai Swords that caters to anybody’s taste and aside from the assortment of traditional Japanese blades they also have swords from movies and TV series such as the Highlander TV series my Favorite, Last Samurai, Blade’s Daywalker Sword and a lot more. They also have swords base on Japanese Anime, perfect for cosplayers, my favorite is One Piece’s Roronoa Zoro’s three piece sword. Lately Geisha’s Blade released their European line of Swords for those Bravehearts who want to get the taste of FREEDOM! Included in their impressive list are those that caters to the maintenance of your swords, Japanese Armor, Wooden Sword perfect for practice they even have Hannya Masks if you want to be more intimidating than just holding a fully sharpen and extremely capable swords, and the list goes on. What impressed me about Geisha’s Blade is the fact that they are very specific with the type of steel they offer and this is essential for sword enthusiast like myself, since I don’t like buying crappy stuff that literally crumbles in my hand, and believe me I’ve experience it, though not with the sword but with the Balisong, it turns out that the butterfly handle was brittle and crumbled easily with little effort from my part, certainly any practitioner worse nightmare not to mention the cost it may inflect. Since then, I always give much thought on the type of material use to forge the blades whatever type of blades they are. And so far only Geisha’s blade hit the mark.

In conclusion

A friend of mine ask me once, why would someone want to buy a sword these days. My crazy yet close to the heart answer was, World War 3 will be fought with Nuclear Weapons and those who survive afterwards will be fighting with sticks and stone, if that’s the case might as well own a good set of steel for self preservation purposes, you’ll never know how handy it is to have one, until that day comes when you’ll say to yourself, I should have bought one.  Simply put and straight to the point, what Geisha’s Blade offer to the table are affordable high quality fully functional Japanese style swords and that line should be enough. If you have any doubts about my conclusion, then feel free to contact them on their Facebook page.
