Intro

Back in a days, I remember my uncle cleaning his “Rambo knife” he dub it his own personal hunting knife, though what he was planning to hunt for was beyond me as were living smack dead center of a highly urbanized neighborhood, rats probably. Anyway, Rambo knives were all the rage during those days, Rambo movies were very popular then. As expected of a die hard Stallone fan he got for himself the Rambo Knife. Seeing it as a kid I did promise myself to get one if I ever had a chance, kids after all. Lets face it, watching Rambo movies made famous for sawing himself and surviving almost impossible odds in a blown out cave with just a knife seem pretty awesome for a movie. It certainly made a lot of parodies in every country imaginable. So, did my Uncle use it for hunting? or for what ever purpose? I can say with great certainty as a credible witness, that them rats was spared from my uncle’s wrath. As for owning a knife, the idea stuck with me until now. Not so much as owning a Rambo knife as I found out in later years through the wonderful world of youtube, that Rambo knives in particular the certain hollow part where in one grasp said implement and stuffed with life prolonging accessories among many other things is actually a piece of perfectly crafted CRAP. In other words its perfect in the movies but utterly useless in reality. It had a good go though for a time, until somebody accidentally poke an eye or two, its basically one of those things you wish you never lay eyes on and want your money back ASAP!. On my part I’d rather have something practical and decent enough to do much of its intended purpose for survival and preparedness and I’ll be a happy guy.

Lets be blunt not all of us, me included has the privilege to buy an Excalibur type of a knife. So many of us opt to buy the next best thing, that to say what we can financially afford. With that in mind looking for an affordable knife is a given. And the Schrade SCHF27 full tang, fixed blade fits the bill just fine.

My Take

Tag by Schrade as Extreme Survival Knife, at first glance the knife by itself looks “Cool” the number of notches at the top gives the knife a saw back look though its just purely for aesthetics and gimmicky with an added pry tool that tuck into the handle itself for good measure, a sort of a out of the box thinking in design with functionality and a little tinge Hollywood but no means the super star, more like a co-star than anything else, despite of that its virtually functional having the benefits of a full tang blade. The blade is made out of 8Cr13Mov high carbon stainless which to my knowledge is adequate and sort of a mid range steel when it come to everything you need your knife to be, that is tough enough, hard enough and sharp enough. I got my knife a year ago and never had the time to sharpen it even know, it still hold the edge though its best to note that I seldom use this knife, the titanium coating works as advertise, the blade itself comes in sharp out of the box. The finger guard works like any other finger guard with adequate finger choil, on that regard any user should take extra care when doing woodcraft while using the choil as the other side of the choil is sharp. The 90 degree spine cutout works great for scraping and fire starting, I’ve also tried using the notches on firesteel, and it works on small firesteel.

The Pry tool, I find it interesting and somewhat ingenious. It doesn’t have all the tool one need but its always nice to have some options. The gut hook needs to be sharpen though, over all its a nice extra tools to have in short notice.

The TPE handle grip is fine and it doesn’t slip even when wet. The TPE handle works as advertise with regards to handling, comfort and hand retention on wet conditions and such, it does have a drawback in its design in relation to the blade itself. The TPE handle is molded into the blade tang, with room for the pry tool and adjacent retention mechanism, this leaves little contact between the blade tang and the TPE handle during production, the resulting less contact, make this TPE handle less sturdy and prone to loosening. The culprit is the pry tool and the adjacent pry tool retention mechanism these two eats up a huge percentage of the contact surface between the TPE handle and blade tang, as a result the handle tend to slip back and forth. In my case the handle slips from the blade tang about 3mm, which I find somewhat disturbing. This problem can easily be rectified, but fixing it may offer some cons. I thought it best to wait and if the problem persist or worst then I may remove the handle and use a parachord as its new handle, by doing so the pry tool will be out of the scene.

The Sheath is made out of Nylon Filled Glass Fiber, I heard that this material tends to loose up over time but in my case it snug and hold the blade well. Not pretty sure about this as compared to a kydex. but I’m pretty sure kydex is more superior than the plastic sheath that comes with this blade. The sheath body itself is very flexible with grommet hole and slots for molle attachments and what not, the sheath’s fix belt loop feature is a drawback for many obvious reasons. Honestly, I’m thinking of removing fix belt loop feature, and still contemplating on it.

Conclusion

Overall the knife offer preppers and outdoors people value for their money and though it may not be the best knife or go to knife, it does do the job and do it well. A no nonsense knife and a certified bang for the buck. It is functional and whatever drawbacks a user will certainly encounter with this knife, it will also be rectifiable.
